Jenks golfer Brendon Jelley commits to OSU
By JIMMIE TRAMEL World Sports Writer
Jenks High School golfer Brendon Jelley, a Class 6A state runnerup as a sophomore last spring, committed to play
at Oklahoma State University.
It was only a matter of time.
Jelley's parents attended OSU. He attends Cowboy basketball and football games (he was at Boone Pickens
Stadium for the 70-28 win over Kansas on Saturday). When he first started playing golf at age 6, he wore a
matching OSU shirt and cap.
"I'm pretty sure half my golf clothes were OSU then and, now today, I can actually wear them without offending any
other schools or anything," Jelley said. "That will be a lot of fun."
Jelley's love of OSU helped him end the recruiting process quickly. He thought it would be fun and exciting to be
recruited and see which colleges expressed interest. But he said the workload of keeping up with all the phone calls
and emails made the recruiting process feel like a job. Jelley's father said his son has been contacted by 40 or 50
Division I schools since Sept. 1.
Jelley said he found out this summer that OSU coach Mike McGraw was interested in him. Jelley said he was
overwhelmed when offered a chance to be a part of what he considers the nation's best collegiate golf program, but
he still took a couple of months to make sure his dream school was the right school.
Jelley is 20th nationally among high school players who are scheduled to graduate in 2013, according to the Polo
golf rankings. He produced three top-five finishes in AJGA national events during the summer of 2011 and, in his
most recent tournament, he shot a two-day total of 8-under par to win the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour's Heritage Hills
Fall Roundup.
